Russian Airstrikes Kill Five, Damage Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure

Russian forces launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine, killing at least five people and damaging civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities, across numerous regions.

The Ukrainian military reported that Russian forces launched 381 Shahed-type attack and decoy drones and 35 missiles of various types overnight.

In Lviv Region, four people were killed and four others injured when their residential building was destroyed. An industrial park caught fire during a missile and drone attack, and public transport routes were temporarily shut down. The city’s mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, reported that parts of the city had no power and urged residents to stay inside as authorities battled multiple fires.

In Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed and 10 others wounded in a combined strike that left more than 73,000 customers without power. A 16-year-old girl was among those receiving medical assistance. Governor Ivan Fedorov said that Russia’s overnight attack left “more than 73,000 consumers… without electricity” in Zaporizhzhia.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, stating that Russia fired over 50 missiles and nearly 500 drones. “Today, the Russians again targeted our infrastructure everything that ensures normal life for our people. We need more protection and faster implementation of all defence agreements, especially on air defence, to deprive this aerial terror of any meaning,” he said.

The attacks have caused widespread power outages, with damage to energy infrastructure reported in several regions, including Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Odesa. Poland scrambled aircraft to ensure air safety and mobilized ground defenses to protect its airspace, particularly near Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said, “Another deliberate act of terror against civilians. Moscow continues to strike homes, schools, and energy facilities  proving that destruction remains its only strategy.” The international community has condemned Russia’s actions, and Ukraine’s leaders are calling for stronger air defense systems to protect civilians.
