Security Forces Uncover Kidnappers’ Hideout In Edo Forest

Security operatives in Edo State have dismantled five suspected kidnapper camps in the Ekeke Erah Forest, Owan East Local Government Area.

The operation was conducted by the Edo State Special Security Squad, codenamed “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers,” in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, local vigilante groups, and other sister security agencies.

The security team trekked nearly five kilometers deep into the forest, where they discovered and destroyed the camps. According to Eribo Ewanta, a member of the squad, signs of recent activity confirmed that the camps were still in use. “We discovered five camps, with clear indications that their occupants had only just fled. We found fire still burning and a pot of food left on the fire,” Ewanta said.

The operation escalated into an exchange of gunfire at a riverbank as suspected kidnappers attempted to evade capture. Although the suspects escaped deeper into the forest, their camps were dismantled and destroyed. Ewanta declared, “Edo State will no longer provide safe haven for criminal elements. We will pursue them relentlessly until they are apprehended.”

The security squad is deploying drones, military personnel, and advanced surveillance in their relentless pursuit of kidnappers. Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has been commended for its unwavering resolve to fortify security across the state. Ewanta emphasized that the operation marked only the beginning of sustained efforts to flush out kidnappers and other violent groups from Edo State.

The security operatives recovered evidence of cattle grazing in the forest, which raised suspicion that the hideouts may have been linked to armed herdsmen. The team reported finding signs of recent human activity, including fire and food left on the fire, confirming the presence of suspected kidnappers in the area.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration has assured residents that the operation is part of a broader effort to ensure the state is safe and secure. The security squad has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

The operation is seen as a significant step towards strengthening security in Edo State and dismantling kidnapper networks. With the security squad’s determination to pursue kidnappers relentlessly, residents can expect improved safety and security in the state.
