SERAP Sues NNPC Over Alleged Missing $2.04 Billion And N164 Billion Oil Revenues

In response to allegations of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/549/2024, seeks to compel the NNPC to account for and explain the whereabouts of $2.04 billion and N164 billion in oil revenues.

This action follows the publication of the 2020 audited report by the Auditor-General of the Federation, which raised concerns about the NNPC’s failure to remit the aforementioned funds into the Federation Account. SERAP alleges that the money may have been diverted, prompting the organization to demand transparency and accountability from the NNPC.

In a statement released by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization emphasized the importance of holding the NNPC accountable for the missing funds. SERAP urges the NNPC to cooperate with investigative agencies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to identify and prosecute those responsible for the alleged diversion of funds.

Furthermore, SERAP highlights the adverse impact of the missing oil revenues on Nigeria’s economy and citizens. The organization argues that the failure to account for these funds not only violates the principles of transparency and accountability but also deprives Nigerians of essential public goods and services.

The lawsuit filed by SERAP underscores the public interest in ensuring the recovery and remittance of the missing funds, as well as the need for the NNPC to fulfill its legal obligation to explain the whereabouts of the disappeared money. The Auditor-General of the Federation has reportedly raised concerns about the disappearance of public funds from the NNPC over several years, indicating a pattern of financial mismanagement within the organization.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Nigerians await further developments in this case, hoping for transparency, accountability, and justice regarding the alleged misappropriation of oil revenues by the NNPC.
