Sorloth’s Late Strike Against Barcelona Sends Atletico Madrid To The Top Of La Liga.

Alexander Sorloth came off the bench to deliver a dramatic injury-time winner as Atletico Madrid staged a comeback to defeat Barcelona and climb to the top of La Liga.

 

Barcelona took the lead in the 30th minute when Pedri linked up brilliantly with Gavi before slotting a composed finish past Jan Oblak. Despite dominating large spells of the match, Hansi Flick’s side could not convert their chances, allowing Atletico to claw their way back into the game.





Rodrigo De Paul capitalised on a defensive error from Marc Casado to equalise on the hour mark. The hosts had opportunities to reclaim the lead, with Raphinha hitting the crossbar and Pedri firing narrowly over, but they were unable to find the decisive goal.

 

The match turned in Atletico’s favour deep into stoppage time when Nahuel Molina delivered a pinpoint cross that Sorloth hammered into the net, sealing Atletico’s 12th consecutive win in all competitions.

 

 

Barcelona’s loss marked their third consecutive home defeat in the league, a worrying trend for Flick’s side. Having held a 10-point lead over Atletico in early November, a string of poor results has seen them slip to second place, three points behind the league leaders, who also have a game in hand.

 

Barcelona’s evening was further overshadowed by missed opportunities, including Gavi’s failure to convert an open header and Raphinha’s missed one-on-one chance. Flick, watching from the stands due to a touchline ban, could only look on as his team faltered under pressure.

 

 

Diego Simeone’s side, in contrast, showcased resilience and efficiency, riding their momentum to ensure they will end 2024 as Spain’s top team. Sorloth’s late heroics brought his season tally to eight league goals, reinforcing his importance to Atletico’s title challenge.

 

With Real Madrid set to face Sevilla on Sunday, Barcelona could drop to third, adding further pressure to their faltering campaign. Meanwhile, Atletico continue to set the pace in the title race, buoyed by their remarkable turnaround in form.

 

Atletico Madrid sit three points clear of Barcelona, while Real Madrid remain in contention with a game in hand. The stage is set for an intriguing battle as the 2024/25 season progresses.
