Sultan Of Sokoto Urges Nigerian Leaders To Listen To Citizens And Govern With Empathy.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, and state governors to heed the cries of Nigerians and address their hardships with compassion rather than authoritarian measures. Speaking in Abuja on 13 August 2025, the revered traditional leader urged political leaders to rule with justice and empathy, eschewing oppressive tactics likened to “beating Nigerians with a koboko” (a traditional whip).

The Sultan’s remarks, delivered during a public address, come at a time of growing public discontent over economic challenges and governance issues. He emphasised the need for leaders to engage with citizens’ concerns, particularly in light of recent hardships, and to foster hope through inclusive policies. “When Nigerians cry out, listen to them. Show them you care, not by force, but by giving them hope,” he said, as reported by multiple sources, including posts on X.

As the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the Sultan’s influence extends beyond the northern region, making his call for empathetic governance particularly significant. He urged leaders to prioritise unity and address the root causes of public frustration, warning that heavy-handed responses risk further alienating the populace. His plea aligns with his longstanding advocacy for dialogue and peaceful coexistence, as evidenced by his previous calls for national unity.

The Sultan also appealed for collective prayers for Nigeria’s progress, encouraging leaders to work collaboratively to rebuild trust. His message resonates with ongoing discussions about the need for governance that reflects the aspirations of Nigeria’s diverse population, which includes over 250 ethnic groups and a near-equal split of Muslims and Christians.

Public reaction, as seen on platforms like X, reflects support for the Sultan’s stance, with many Nigerians praising his call for accountability and compassion. The statement comes amidst other significant developments, such as the Federal Government’s efforts to address infrastructure challenges, indicating a broader push for reform.

As Nigeria navigates complex socio-economic issues, the Sultan’s words serve as a timely reminder for leaders to prioritise dialogue and empathy. His call for justice over “koboko” governance underscores the importance of responsive leadership in building a more united and prosperous nation.
