Super Eagles: Troost Ekong Weighs International Retirement After World Cup Miss

Super Eagles captain William Troost Ekong is reportedly considering bringing his international career to an end following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The development has raised concerns among fans, given his leadership role and long-term presence in the national team.

According to respected journalist MikeThePundit, the experienced defender may not feature for the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco scheduled for December. His possible absence would mark a major change for the squad as preparations continue for the competition.

Mike revealed on X that Troost Ekong shared his thoughts with his teammates immediately after the team’s defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday. The journalist noted that the captain hinted strongly that he might not return to the squad.

“Troost Ekong considering retirement from the Super Eagles. The captain told the players after the DR Congo game, ‘I will watch you as a fan at the AFCON,’” Mike reported. The statement suggests that the defender could be stepping away sooner than expected.

Troost Ekong, aged 32, has played a reduced role for the Super Eagles in recent matches. His involvement has not been as prominent as in previous years, raising further questions about his future plans.

The Al Kholood of Saudi Arabia centre back has not been included in the starting line-up in any of the team’s last three games, adding to speculation that he may be preparing to conclude his time with the national team.
