Super Falcons Exit Paris Olympics After Defeat to Japan.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have bowed out of the women’s football event at the 2024 Olympic Games following a 3-1 defeat to Japan.
Japan quickly took control of the game, pinning Nigeria back early on. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a superb save in the seventh minute to deny the Japanese an early goal.
Despite Nnadozie’s efforts, Japan continued their dominance, with Osinachi Ohale making a crucial block nine minutes later. The pressure paid off for the Asian champions as Chelsea forward Maika Hamano handed her team the lead in the 22nd minute. Mina Tanaka doubled the advantage just ten minutes later.
The Super Falcons showed resilience, with PSG’s new signing Jennifer Echegini pulling a goal back three minutes before half-time. However, Japan’s Hana Kitagawa restored their two-goal cushion in first-half stoppage time with a sublime free kick.
In the second half, the Super Falcons dominated possession, while Japan sat back and looked for opportunities to counter-attack. A penalty was awarded to Japan in the 52nd minute after Rasheedat Ajibade was adjudged to have pulled an opponent inside the box. However, after a VAR review, the decision was rescinded.
Despite their efforts, Nigeria finished bottom of Group C, having failed to secure any points from their three games.
