Nigeria Secures Hosting Rights for 2024 Davis Cup in Abuja
Nigeria’s tennis players can anticipate strong home support during the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group II qualifying rounds, as the country has successfully secured the rights to host the prestigious event.
The Nigerian tennis team earned their place in Group III of the Davis Cup alongside Ghana, following an impressive performance in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2023. Led by Coach Benson Ishicheli, players such as David Ekpenyong, Uche Oparaoji, Wilson Igbinovia, Peter Lawal, and Christopher Bulus showcased exceptional skills to secure qualification to Group III.
With the confirmation of hosting rights, the qualification for Group II will take place in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The bid to host this significant event was submitted earlier this year, and the official hosting dates have been set for 15th July 2024.
Engr. Ifedayo Akindoju, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, confirmed the news, stating, “Yes, 15th July,” indicating Nigeria’s readiness to host the Davis Cup event.
Makpa Aliyu, Secretary General of the Federation, also verified the news, noting that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had officially confirmed Nigeria’s hosting rights through a letter sent to the national body.
Aliyu stated, “Yes, I can now confirm to you that Nigeria will be hosting the Davis Cup Group III qualifier this year. I have the letter sent by the ITF with me and I can confirm it to you, officially, that we are preparing to host the other nations.”
During the qualifying round, Namibia, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, and Nigeria will compete for two slots in Group II, promising intense competition and thrilling tennis matches.
