Background to the Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement

On 15 December 2025, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, with an effective commencement date of 2 January 2026. This decision was taken in furtherance of the Force’s constitutional and statutory responsibility to maintain public safety, prevent crime, and strengthen internal security across the country.

The enforcement initiative was designed as part of broader efforts to address the misuse of tinted vehicle glasses, which have been linked to criminal activities and security threats nationwide.

Interim Court Order Restricting Enforcement

Subsequent to the announcement, the Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order of court issued on 17 December 2025 in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025. The order restrains the Force from proceeding with the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or until the interim order is set aside or vacated by the court.

Police Response and Legal Compliance

In strict adherence to constitutional provisions and in recognition of the supremacy of the rule of law, the Nigeria Police Force has complied fully with the interim court order. The Force has formally entered appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and filed an application seeking the vacation of the interim order.

The court has adjourned the case to 20 January 2026 for further proceedings.

Suspension of Nationwide Enforcement

Consequently, and in strict compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold pending the court’s determination of the matter. All commands and formations of the Force have been duly informed and directed to ensure full compliance with the court’s directive.

Commitment to Rule of Law and Public Safety

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, reaffirms the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the rule of law and respect for judicial authority.

He emphasizes that while the Force remains resolute in discharging its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property, it will continue to do so strictly within the bounds of the law.

The Nigeria Police Force remains proactive in deploying lawful, intelligence-led, and community-oriented policing strategies to address prevailing security challenges and safeguard public safety across the nation.

Public Assurance and Further Updates

Members of the public are hereby assured that the Nigeria Police Force will keep citizens duly informed of any further developments in the matter. Clear guidance will be issued as appropriate following the court’s decision, in the overriding interest of public order, national security, and the maintenance of public confidence.
