Tinubu Orders Withdrawal Of Police Escorts From VIPs, Refocuses Force On Core Duties

“VIPs to Rely on NSCDC as Police Focus on Core Duties”

Redeployment of Officers to Strengthen Security Nationwide

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of police personnel assigned to guard Very Important Persons (VIPs), instructing that they be redeployed to strengthen core policing duties across Nigeria. The move is aimed at enhancing security presence, particularly in underserved and remote communities.

VIPs to Seek Protection from NSCDC

Under the new directive, VIPs requesting security protection will now turn to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), for well-armed personnel, rather than relying on the Nigeria Police Force. Government officials emphasized that the shift will allow police officers to focus on community policing and law enforcement duties.

Addressing Gaps in Community Policing

Many parts of Nigeria, especially rural areas, face shortages of police personnel at local stations, limiting effective protection of citizens. Redeploying officers from VIP assignments is intended to strengthen policing in these communities and improve response to security challenges.

Plans to Expand and Modernise the Police Force

In line with broader security reforms, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. The federal government is also collaborating with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide, ensuring that new and existing officers are better equipped to maintain public safety.

High-Level Security Meeting

The directive was issued during a security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja, attended by Chief of Army Staff – Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff – Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Inspector General of Police – Kayode Egbetokun, and Director-General of the Department of State Services – Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

May Nigeria Succeed.
