A passenger train travelling from Itakpe to Warri derailed on Saturday in Kogi State, leaving many passengers stranded for several hours before help arrived.
The incident caused tension among travellers as they awaited rescue and security support.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Kogi Command, CSP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lokoja. He stated that the derailment occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at Adogo community in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, once a distress call was received, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, immediately deployed police officers to the scene to provide protection and prevent any form of security threat to the stranded passengers.
“The CP personally visited the Adogo derailment site on Sunday for an on the spot assessment. He met with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the stranded passengers. He also directed the deployment of additional security personnel to safeguard the people and facilities,” Ovye Aya said.
The Police Command confirmed that all passengers were successfully evacuated to the Ajaokuta station, where further support was provided to ensure they continued their journey safely. No casualties were recorded from the incident.
Ovye Aya added that the Commissioner of Police reiterated the Command’s commitment to working closely with other security agencies to guarantee the safety of lives and property across Kogi State.
