Trump Announces End To US Sanctions On Syria In Bid For Regional Stability

Trump Announces End To US Sanctions On Syria In Bid For Regional Stability.

President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that the United States would lift sanctions on Syria, offering a vital economic lifeline to a nation ravaged by nearly 14 years of civil war and decades of authoritarian rule under the Assad family. The surprise announcement, made during a business forum in Riyadh, was met with resounding cheers and a standing ovation from the audience.

The decision comes ahead of Trump’s first meeting with Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Shara, scheduled for Wednesday in Saudi Arabia. Al-Shara, who led the rebel alliance that toppled President Bashar al-Assad in December, represents a new chapter for the war-torn country. Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia marks the first major state trip of his second term.

Speaking to the forum, Trump expressed hope for Syria’s future under its new leadership. “There is a new government that will, hopefully, succeed in stabilising the country and keeping peace,” he said. “That’s what we want to see in Syria. They’ve had their share of travesty, war, killing—many years.”

The lifting of sanctions signals a significant shift in US policy, aiming to ease the economic chokehold on Syria, a nation pivotal to Middle East stability. Trump framed the move as a step towards restoring normal relations between the US and Syria for the first time in over a decade. “I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness,” he added, nodding to his hosts in Saudi Arabia.

The announcement follows years of economic isolation for Syria, exacerbated by sanctions imposed due to the Assad regime’s brutal crackdown on dissent and human rights abuses. The civil war, which began in 2011, left hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced, devastating the country’s infrastructure and economy.

Trump’s decision has sparked optimism for Syria’s recovery, though challenges remain as the new government works to rebuild and unify a fractured nation. The meeting with al-Shara is expected to focus on fostering cooperation and supporting Syria’s path to stability.

As Trump concluded his remarks, the crowd’s enthusiastic response underscored the regional significance of the announcement, heralding a potential turning point for Syria and its people.
