Trump Names Pam Bondi As Attorney General After Gaetz Withdraws

Trump Names Pam Bondi As Attorney General After Gaetz Withdraws.

US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his choice for attorney general, following the withdrawal of Matt Gaetz from consideration. Bondi, a veteran prosecutor and long-time Trump ally, has a history of high-profile legal work and public support for the former president.

Announcing the decision, Trump praised Bondi’s extensive experience in law enforcement, stating: “Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on violent criminals and made the streets safe for Florida families.”

Bondi served as Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, earning a reputation for her tough-on-crime approach. She became a key figure in Trump’s political and legal orbit, acting as a member of his defence team during his first Senate impeachment trial, where he was acquitted. She also supported him during his hush money trial in New York and served as a legal adviser during his White House tenure.

Bondi has remained an outspoken advocate for Trump, participating in his rallies and aligning herself with his political agenda. She has also led the legal arm of the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank established by former Trump staffers.

If confirmed by the Senate, Bondi will oversee the Department of Justice, which includes more than 115,000 employees and operates with a budget of roughly $45 billion (£35.7 billion). She would also play a central role in implementing Trump’s controversial plans for the department, including cracking down on what he describes as a “weaponised” justice system.

Bondi has been critical of the ongoing legal cases against Trump, as well as the actions of special counsel Jack Smith, who brought federal charges against him. Trump, in a social media post, vowed that Bondi would refocus the Justice Department on fighting crime and restoring public confidence, stating: “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again.”

Her nomination signals Trump’s intent to reshape the Justice Department to align with his administration’s goals, including tougher border protections, dismantling criminal organisations, and targeting what he perceives as politically motivated actions within government agencies.

Bondi’s confirmation would mark a significant moment in the Trump administration’s early efforts to implement its vision for law and order in the United States.
