The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has significantly increased its passport production capacity, now able to produce 4,000-5,000 passports daily, up from the previous 250-300 per day.
This milestone follows the inauguration of the Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the development during an inspection of the new facility. He revealed that the system can personalise over 1,000 passports per hour, enabling the NIS to meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation. Tunji-Ojo said, “This project is 100% ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services.” The centralisation marks the first time in 62 years that Nigeria has operated a single passport production centre.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the reform aligns with global best practices, ensuring uniformity in passport production, enhancing the integrity of Nigerian travel documents internationally, and optimising operations to reduce delays and eliminate inefficiencies. He further stated that the NIS is working towards reducing passport processing time from two weeks to just one week.
The Minister described the development as a step toward bringing services closer to Nigerians while driving a culture of efficiency and total passport system reform. The new facility was developed without any cost to the government, reflecting the administration’s commitment to modernising public services and improving service delivery to Nigerians.
