U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, convened an important roundtable discussion with prominent women technology leaders in Nairobi, Kenya on April 24, to discuss the Biden-Harris Administration’s ambitious “Digital Transformation with Africa initiative.”
During the engaging dialogue, participants shared notable successes achieved by women entrepreneurs and technology leaders in Kenya while also addressing the persisting challenges faced by Kenyan women within the digital realm. Secretary Raimondo stated the potential opportunities that the Digital Transformation with Africa initiative could unlock, emphasizing the pivotal role of women in driving innovation and economic growth.
Of significant mention was the Department of Commerce’s proactive measures to promote inclusivity and empower women in the tech sector. Secretary Raimondo highlighted a recent landmark announcement from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).
The NTIA revealed plans to allocate funds for the African Women Digital Leaders Training Program, a pioneering initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of women tech leaders across Africa.
This program will offer selected participants invaluable opportunities for training, networking, and mentorship within the vibrant tech ecosystems of Washington, DC, and Silicon Valley. By fostering collaboration between African women tech leaders and their U.S. counterparts, the initiative seeks to catalyze innovation, entrepreneurship, and cross-border partnerships.
