Secretary Antony J. Blinken’s visit to Abidjan on January 22-23, 2024, marked a significant step in advancing commitments made during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, focusing on expanding partnerships with the government, institutions, and people of Côte d’Ivoire.

The visit aimed at strengthening democracy, promoting economic growth, improving security, and addressing critical issues such as climate, food security, and health.

Key Points from the U.S.-Côte d’Ivoire Relationship:

1. Shared Values and Investments: The United States and Côte d’Ivoire share a robust relationship rooted in shared values. The U.S. heavily invests in Ivorian people and institutions, emphasizing a partnership based on mutual respect.

2. Africa Cup of Nations Recognition: Secretary Blinken acknowledged Côte d’Ivoire’s hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations, highlighting the professionalism, competition, and diplomacy showcased during the event.

3. Stability and Conflict Prevention: The U.S. announced $45 million in new funding to help Côte d’Ivoire and its neighbors prevent conflict and promote stability, aligning with the President’s Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability.

4.Democracy and Governance Support: The U.S. is actively investing in Côte d’Ivoire’s institutions to strengthen governance, build capacity, and enhance service delivery. Various programs, including Fulbright Fellowships, aim to promote democratic values and inclusivity.

5. Economic Growth and Trade: The U.S. continues to expand its commercial partnership with Côte d’Ivoire, supporting economic growth and trade. The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, valued at $536.7 million, focuses on major infrastructure projects.

6. Security and Defense Cooperation: Cooperation in security and defense is a key aspect of the partnership, with initiatives to reduce terrorist transit, enhance border security, and strengthen community resilience to prevent violent extremism.

7. Health Cooperation: The U.S. is the largest investor in Côte d’Ivoire’s health sector. Through programs like PEPFAR and the President’s Malaria Initiative, substantial investments are made to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and strengthen health systems.
