Tragic Death Of Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei Shocks East African Athletics Community.

The untimely death of Ugandan Olympian and long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has sent shockwaves through the East African athletics community, leaving her friends, family, and supporters devastated. The 33-year-old mother-of-two tragically passed away after suffering severe burns in a brutal attack by her ex-boyfriend in north-western Kenya.

The incident occurred on Sunday, outside Cheptegei’s home, when her former partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly doused her in petrol and set her alight. Cheptegei had just returned from church when the attack took place, with her two young daughters reportedly witnessing the horrifying act and attempting to intervene.

Cheptegei’s mother, Agnes Cheptegei, spoke briefly to reporters outside the hospital where her daughter succumbed to her injuries, struggling to find words through her grief. She described Rebecca as kind-hearted and a “good child,” reflecting on the immense loss to their family. Her sister, Violet, also heartbroken, said: “I’m in pain but we leave it to God,” as the family and community mourn the senseless loss of a talented athlete and beloved mother.

The killing has not only shaken Cheptegei’s loved ones but has left the athletics world reeling. Known for her determination and skill on the track, she had become a source of pride for Uganda and East Africa. Her death has highlighted the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in the region, raising further concerns about the protection of women and the need for stronger measures to prevent such tragedies.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, while the athletics community unites in grief, remembering Rebecca Cheptegei for her contributions to the sport and her dedication to her family.
