The newly inaugurated Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motomori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, has pledged that obedience to court orders will be non-negotiable under her leadership

She emphasized that no individual or institution, regardless of their status, would be allowed to disregard or undermine court rulings.

Justice Kekere-Ekun made these remarks on Monday during the commencement of the 2024/2025 legal year and the swearing-in of 87 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the Supreme Court in Abuja. She asserted the judiciary’s firm commitment to upholding the sanctity of judicial decisions in line with the rule of law.

The CJN called for collective efforts to ensure the full implementation of the rule of law, stating, “Disobedience to court orders or non-compliance with judicial directives is a direct affront to democracy and an invitation to anarchy.” She stressed the importance of respecting all features of democracy to maintain the societal balance and preserve citizens’ rights.

Justice Kekere-Ekun further assured Nigerians of her determination to improve public perception of the judiciary, acknowledging the negative image that has plagued the justice system. “Over the years, various factors have contributed to the negative image of the judiciary. However, we are determined to change the narrative and make the judiciary a source of pride for all Nigerians,” she said.

The CJN also condemned the practice of forum shopping by some lawyers, which has resulted in conflicting court orders from courts of equal jurisdiction. She warned that such actions would not be tolerated, promising consequences for any misconduct that could tarnish the judiciary’s reputation.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s address marks the beginning of what she described as a “new era” for the Nigerian judiciary, with a focus on upholding the rule of law, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and restoring public confidence in the justice system.
