US Reassures Israel Amid Rising Hezbollah Threat

Senior US officials assured their Israeli counterparts of robust support in the event of a full-scale war with Hezbollah, according to a senior administration official.

This comes amid escalating cross-border attacks between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group, raising concerns of a broader conflict in the Middle East.

Key Israeli officials, including Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, met with top US figures such as National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and White House Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk.

The discussions covered a range of issues, focusing particularly on the situation on Israel’s northern border, Iran, and ongoing ceasefire and hostage negotiations.

US officials made it clear that the Biden administration is prepared to provide Israel with necessary security assistance should Hezbollah’s provocations escalate into a full-blown war. However, they emphasized that the US would not deploy American troops on the ground.

The reassurances follow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public accusation that the US is withholding weapons and ammunition, which has led to a tense exchange between the two allies. Despite these tensions, the US has reiterated its commitment to Israel’s security.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, Hezbollah’s activities against Israel have intensified, prompting heightened US vigilance regarding the potential for expanded conflict. In response, the Biden administration dispatched US envoy Amos Hochstein to the region to aid in de-escalation efforts.

US officials are particularly concerned about the possibility of Hezbollah overwhelming Israel’s northern air defenses, including the Iron Dome system. This scenario underscores the critical nature of US support for Israel.

In addition to military assurances, The discussions in Washington explored diplomatic solutions to reduce tensions along the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel. This included strategies for returning displaced Israelis and Lebanese to their homes.
