The United States has lifted its visa restrictions on Ghana, restoring access to five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges for Ghanaian travelers.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the reversal on September 26, 2025, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Ablakwa stated that the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, directly communicated the “good news” to him during a bilateral meeting. “We are thrilled to announce that the United States has lifted its visa restrictions on Ghana, restoring our citizens’ access to five-year multiple-entry visas,” Ablakwa said.
The visa restrictions were initially imposed in July 2025, limiting Ghanaian visa applicants to a maximum of three-month single-entry visas. The Trump Administration cited persistent visa overstays, particularly among Ghanaian students, as the reason for the restrictions.
Ghanaian travelers can now enjoy enhanced consular privileges, including multiple-entry visas valid for five years. This development is expected to boost travel and trade between the two countries.
Despite the positive development, concerns remain about Ghana’s role in accepting deportees from the US. At least 14 West Africans have been sent to Ghana since September, with some being held in poor conditions before being forwarded to their countries of origin or other nations like Togo.
Ablakwa’s announcement comes after months of diplomatic negotiations between Ghana and the US. The restoration of visa privileges is seen as a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
The US decision to lift visa restrictions on Ghana is a welcome development for Ghanaians traveling to the US for business, education, or leisure. “This development will undoubtedly boost travel and trade between our two countries,” Ablakwa added.
