Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken is set to depart for his fourth visit to the Middle East since the terrorist attacks of October 7th, with additional stops in Europe.

The week-long trip will include visits to Türkiye, Greece, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the West Bank, and Egypt, where he will engage in meetings with foreign counterparts and address critical issues.

The primary focus of Secretary Blinken’s discussions will encompass several key matters:

1. Humanitarian Assistance to Gaza: Immediate measures to substantially increase humanitarian aid to Gaza will be a top priority. The Secretary will emphasize the need for expanded and sustained safe access for humanitarian organizations to deliver essential supplies to the Palestinian people.

2. sraeli Military Campaign and Civilian Protection: Discussions with the Government of Israel will revolve around its ongoing military campaign against Hamas, aiming to prevent a recurrence of the October 7th attacks. Attention will be given to transitioning to the next phase of operations, enhancing civilian protection measures, and facilitating the return of Palestinians to their homes. Lowering tensions in the West Bank will also be emphasized.

3.Hostage Release Efforts: Efforts to bring home remaining hostages, including American citizens, will be a key focus. Secretary Blinken will underscore the utmost priority of ensuring the safety and security of American citizens.

4. Preventing Conflict Expansion: The Secretary will engage in discussions on preventing the conflict from escalating, urging specific steps by parties to avoid further tensions. Addressing the need to deter Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea will be part of these talks.

5. Path Forward for Gaza: Emphasizing the responsibility of all parties, Secretary Blinken will seek to chart a path forward for Gaza that ensures lasting security for both Israelis and Palestinians. This involves building on principles outlined in Tokyo on November 8th, including a sustained mechanism for reconstruction and Palestinian-led governance of a unified West Bank and Gaza.

The Secretary anticipates challenging conversations given the tough issues facing the region. However, he believes it is the responsibility of the United States to lead diplomatic efforts and tackle these challenges head-on, aiming for a more peaceful and integrated region. The trip will also include discussions on bilateral and regional cooperation with Turkish and Greek counterparts, covering topics such as NATO accession and support for Ukraine.
