Vietnamese property magnate Truong My Lan, facing a death sentence for a multi-billion-dollar fraud, has pledged to transform her vast property empire into a “golden goose” to repay the funds she embezzled, according to her lawyer.
Lan, convicted of siphoning off US$27 billion from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) through fraud, lost an appeal against her death penalty in December 2024. The appeal court upheld the sentence but noted that she could escape execution by repaying three-quarters of the stolen assets.
In a letter penned from prison and addressed to a state-controlled committee managing her properties, Lan argued that her assets have been significantly undervalued. Her lawyer, Giang Hong Thanh, told AFP that this undervaluation risks losses to the state and infringes on Lan’s rights.
