The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has announced the release of the results for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a statement on Monday, Patrick Areghan, the Head of Nigeria’s Office at WAEC, revealed that out of the 1,613,733 candidates who took the examination, results for 1,476,565 candidates, which accounts for 91.5%, have been fully processed and released.

The announcement was made in Lagos.

He further mentioned that the results of 137,168 candidates, constituting 8.5%, are still undergoing processing for some of their subjects.

This delay is due to various issues such as shortcomings, lack of seriousness, lethargy, incomplete CASS (Continuous Assessment), upload, and failure to adhere to examination rules, among other factors, which are linked to the concerned schools and candidates.

Nevertheless, the WAEC chief assured that measures are being taken to swiftly conclude the resolution process, ensuring that all the affected candidates will have their results fully processed and released in the next few days.

Areghan announced an improvement in pass rate by candidates as a total of 1,361,608 candidates, representing 84.38 per cent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects with or without English Language or Mathematics.

A total of 1,287,920 candidates, which accounts for 79.81 percent of the overall candidates, achieved credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Meanwhile, WAEC hinted that The results of 262,803 candidates, representing 16.29% of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
