Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has faulted the decision of an Oyo State High Court which lifted the earlier order stopping the Peoples Democratic Party from holding its national convention.
The court’s ruling now allows the PDP to go ahead with preparations for the convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan.
Wike described the judgement as unacceptable and insisted that he would challenge it to ensure compliance with due process. According to him, the party must not set aside its rules. He stated that “we cannot throw due process aside” while stressing the need for the PDP to operate within its constitution and the Electoral Act.
The suit was filed by aggrieved members of the party who claimed that the PDP did not follow proper procedures before announcing the convention. They alleged that valid state congresses were not conducted and that adequate notice was not issued in line with the party’s constitutional provisions.
Reacting to the development, Wike and his supporters under the platform known as Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders maintained that the PDP leadership must ensure that all actions taken reflect legality. They said the goal is to restore order and credibility within the party, especially ahead of future elections.
Some party members however expressed concern that Wike’s opposition could deepen internal divisions within the PDP. They accused him of using legal battles to influence the party’s direction and weaken the national leadership. The ongoing dispute continues to fuel tensions over the legitimacy of certain national officers.
The court’s decision has once again placed the PDP under public scrutiny as stakeholders await the next steps. Many party members are divided over whether the convention should proceed or be postponed to allow further reconciliation and legal clarity before the 2027 elections.
