Wikipedia Confirms Chief Owolabi Salis As First Nigerian To Travel To Space.

Chief Owolabi Salis, a prominent Nigerian lawyer and finance expert based in the United States, has been officially recognised by Wikipedia as the first Nigerian to venture into space. This historic achievement, corroborated by credible sources, marks a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent in the field of space exploration.

On 29 June 2025, Chief Salis joined five other passengers on Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-33 mission, launched from the company’s West Texas facility. The suborbital flight crossed the Kármán line, the internationally accepted boundary of space at 100 kilometres above Earth, reaching a maximum altitude of 105.2 kilometres. The 10-minute journey provided the crew with a stunning view of Earth and the experience of weightlessness, sparking widespread celebrations across Nigeria.

Hailing from Ikorodu in Lagos State, Salis described the mission as a “spiritual journey” aimed at inspiring future generations. A versatile figure, he is a licensed lawyer and chartered accountant in both Nigeria and the United States, as well as a philanthropist and former gubernatorial candidate in Lagos. His book, *Equitocracy*, advocates for fairness in democratic governance, reflecting his commitment to social justice.

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) praised Salis’ feat as a “significant milestone” for Nigeria’s space ambitions. Felix Ale, NASRDA’s Director of Media and Corporate Communications, highlighted the mission’s role in showcasing Nigeria’s growing interest in space exploration. The agency also noted its partnership with the Space Research and Exploration Agency for future Blue Origin missions, hinting at more opportunities for Nigerians in space.

Salis’ achievement has been hailed as a symbol of Nigeria’s rising influence in global aerospace and scientific communities. American sculptor Steve N. Barber announced plans to create a monumental sculpture in his honour, celebrating his trailblazing contribution. The mission’s crew, known as “The Solstice 33,” included Allie and Carl Kuehner, Leland Larson, Freddie Rescigno Jr., and Jim Sitkin, with their mission patch embodying humanity’s drive to explore new frontiers.

This groundbreaking flight not only represents a personal victory for Chief Salis but also opens doors for greater African involvement in space exploration. His journey is set to inspire young Nigerians to pursue careers in science, technology, and space travel, cementing Nigeria’s place on the global stage.
