Equatorial Guinea have secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without playing, following Togo’s 1-0 defeat to Liberia in their Group E qualifier on Wednesday. This result guarantees Equatorial Guinea a top-two finish in the group, confirming their spot in next year’s finals in Morocco.
The Sparrowhawks of Togo had needed a victory in Monrovia to keep their qualification hopes alive, but their dreams were dashed when Mohammed Sangare scored a late penalty in the 83rd minute to hand Liberia the win. This marks Togo’s fourth consecutive absence from the Nations Cup, with their last appearance dating back to 2017 in Gabon.
With this qualification, Equatorial Guinea join Algeria, who have already secured top honours in Group E. The National Thunder’s remaining two matches, including a home fixture against Algeria and an away game against Togo, will not impact their qualification status.
Equatorial Guinea’s consistent progress in recent tournaments highlights their growing presence in African football. Earlier this year, they reached the last 16 in the 2023 Nations Cup held in Ivory Coast, further establishing their competitiveness on the continental stage.
