Asari Dokubo Condemns Alleged Betrayal By Yoruba Community, Pledges Northern Alliance

Asari Dokubo Condemns Alleged Betrayal By Yoruba Community, Pledges Northern Alliance.

In a recently released video, former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo criticised the Yoruba community, accusing them of betraying the Ijaw and Niger Delta people despite their support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election. The video, which has garnered widespread attention online, sparked extensive public discourse, particularly regarding inter-regional alliances and trust within Nigeria’s complex political landscape.

In the video, Dokubo expressed regret over having questioned past decisions made by notable Ijaw leaders, including former Governor Melford Okilo, who had chosen to align with northern Nigeria. Addressing the Ijaw people, Dokubo pledged to revive and strengthen alliances with the North, stating, “I apologise to our fathers, Melford Okilo and Prieye. They were not wrong to align with the North. From now on, we’ll strengthen ties with the North.”

His impassioned remarks included accusations against the Yoruba, labelling them as “betrayers” who have not valued the contributions made by the Ijaw people to President Tinubu’s victory. “We risked our lives, voted, and did everything, and this is what we get?” he lamented. He criticised the perceived lack of gratitude from the Yoruba community, adding, “The Yoruba people do not value the Ijaw contribution. They betray us!”

Dokubo’s grievances appear to stem from President Tinubu’s recent move to dismantle the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs—a decision that some believe marginalises the interests of the region. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirmed the President’s decision to eliminate both the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development, further fuelling tensions.

As Dokubo’s call for a renewed northern alliance continues to generate debate, the video’s release has brought attention to the evolving political dynamics between the Niger Delta and Yoruba communities, with many Nigerians weighing in on the implications for inter-regional relationships.
