EPL: Nkunku’s Late Goal Seals Chelsea Victory In Record-Breaking Match Against Bournemouth

Nkunku’s Late Goal Seals Chelsea Victory In Record-Breaking Match Against Bournemouth.

Substitute Christopher Nkunku struck late to secure a 1-0 victory for Chelsea over Bournemouth in a feisty Premier League clash that saw a record 14 yellow cards handed out.

Despite Chelsea leaving with all three points, it was Bournemouth who dominated much of the match, creating the bulk of the chances. Their £40 million signing, Evanilson, missed a golden opportunity to open his Premier League account when his first-half penalty was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Bournemouth’s relentless pressure saw them come close on multiple occasions, with Marcus Tavernier and Ryan Christie both being denied by the woodwork. Despite their efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net.

Chelsea, however, made the most of their opportunity. With just minutes remaining, debutant Jadon Sancho threaded a perfect through-ball to Nkunku, who coolly slotted the ball past Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers to secure the win for the Blues.

The match was not just notable for its result, but also for its aggressive nature. Referee Anthony Taylor handed out a Premier League record 14 yellow cards, with Bournemouth receiving six and Chelsea eight. This eclipsed the previous record of 12 yellow cards set in Chelsea’s 2016 match against Tottenham and a 2010 fixture between Wolves and Newcastle.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca brushed off concerns about the high number of bookings, saying, “It is not a problem for me with this amount of yellow cards. It is what it is. Sometimes the game demands the way you have to behave.”

The victory sees Chelsea climb to seventh in the Premier League, as they prepare to face West Ham in their next match.
