Spain has secured a quarter-final showdown with Euro 2024 hosts Germany, following a 4-1 victory over Georgia. Despite an early scare, Spain managed to overcome the debutants at Cologne Stadium.
Georgia took a surprise lead in the 18th minute when Spain defender Robin le Normand inadvertently poked Otar Kakabadze’s cross into his own net. However, Spain’s persistence paid off as Manchester City’s Rodri equalised with a powerful shot into the bottom corner, beating Georgia’s impressive goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Spain continued to dominate and took the lead when Fabian Ruiz headed in a cross from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal. Nico Williams then made it 3-1 with a powerful strike, and Dani Olmo capped the victory with a precise finish.
Georgia, though spirited and unpredictable, were unable to contain Spain’s possession game. Despite exiting the tournament, Georgia earned respect for their performances.
Spain will now face Germany in Stuttgart on Friday, aiming to maintain their impressive form and continue their quest for the title.
“This is the path we are on. Germany at home will be very strong but we have no fear,” said Rodri. “We are here to try to win.”
Spain’s flawless group stage record and resilient performance against Georgia have solidified their status as tournament favourites, with their upcoming clash against Germany expected to be their toughest test yet.
