The Federal Government has issued a directive to halt mining operations in the vicinity of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, disclosed this decision on Tuesday in Abuja.
The suspension of mining activities in the area is aimed at facilitating an investigation into suspected illegal mining activities near the educational institution.
According to a statement by the minister’s media aide, Segun Tomori, Alake expressed concern over reports of unlawful mining or suspicious activities by mining operators within the university premises.
In response, the Ministry promptly dispatched officials from the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and Mines Inspectorate for an initial assessment. Initial findings indicated ongoing activities in the vicinity, prompting the Ministry to halt all mining operations, legal or illegal, pending further inquiry.
Upon engaging with mining operators, it was discovered that some were involved in illicit activities, while others presented licences and consent letters, prompting a need for thorough verification. Consequently, the Ministry convened a meeting with university authorities to gather relevant information.
Following the fruitful discussions, the Minister announced an indefinite suspension of all mining activities within the university premises, its teaching hospital, and the surrounding areas until a comprehensive investigation is concluded.
