President Bola Tinubu is expected to unveil a new electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system on Wednesday, according to an announcement by the National Population Commission (NPC) on Monday.
NPC Chairman Nasir Kwarra said the e-CRVS launch demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening civil registration data collection and timely access to vital events statistics in the country. The system aims to accelerate improved CRVS over the next decade to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
The e-CRVS introduces digital technologies for secure data storage and integration from multiple systems, providing transformative outcomes in a cost-effective manner, per a readiness assessment report.
The commission partnered with tech firm Banksforte Technologies Ltd on a public-private partnership to fully digitize processes including birth/death registration and marriage/divorce notifications.
The system issues digital certificates and enables verified access and analysis of civil registrations data.
Kwarra stated this marks a complete shift from paper-based to state-of-the-art digital recording of vital events conforming to international best practices. “This electronic CRVS promises to revolutionize how vital events are recorded, tracked, and analyzed in the country,” he said.
Additionally, NPC’s recent census mapping using Geographic Information Systems captured nationwide geospatial data. President Tinubu will also launch this geospatial repository database for public and private sector use.
The CRVS National Coordination Committee will be inaugurated at Wednesday’s launch event.
