The newly constructed High Court complex in Kwara State, located in the Government Reservation Area of Ilorin, the state capital, was severely damaged by fire early on Tuesday morning.
The inferno ravaged the main building, damaging 40 offices, three open courtrooms, the Registry Department, and the Litigation Office.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the fire, which was first noticed at around 7:25 am, was triggered by a surge in electricity supply to the area. Responding swiftly to a distress call, firefighters rushed to the scene to combat the blaze.
Hassan Adekunle, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating, “The imposing State High Court building was ablaze, with the registry department and litigation office particularly affected by the inferno.”
Despite the challenges faced, the firefighters exhibited commendable courage and determination, successfully preventing the complete devastation of the State High Court. Adekunle emphasized the importance of electrical safety measures, highlighting the need for vigilance and preparedness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
In a similar incident the previous evening, a building comprising 15 rooms and a shop in Ilorin was completely consumed by fire due to a power surge. Adekunle reiterated the importance of switching off electrical appliances, especially before bedtime, to minimize the risk of fire outbreaks.
Director Falade Olumuyiwa urged citizens to prioritize safety awareness and precautions in their daily lives.
