France Set Up Olympic Men’s Football Semi-Final with Egypt
France has advanced to the Olympic men’s football semi-final after a 1-0 victory over Argentina in a highly charged quarter-final encounter marked by tension and conflict at the final whistle.
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta secured the win for the hosts with a header from Michael Olise’s corner in the fifth minute. Despite Argentina’s best chance coming just before half-time, with Giuliano Simeone heading over from close range, they were unable to equalise.
The match saw further drama as France had a late goal ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) due to a foul by Maghnes Akliouche before Olise’s deflected shot found the net.
The tension between the teams was palpable, fuelled by recent animosities. French fans notably booed the Argentinian national anthem at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, reflecting ongoing hostilities. This animosity stems from incidents such as the derogatory song sung by Argentina players about France’s black players after their Copa America win on 14 July.
The quarter-final clash ended with players and coaches from both sides clashing on the pitch, underscoring the heated rivalry.
France, who last won Olympic gold in men’s football in 1984, will face Egypt in the semi-final on Monday at 20:00 BST. The Pharaohs secured their place by defeating Paraguay 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
