Ghana’s Chief Justice Suspended Amid Misconduct Investigation

Ghana’s Chief Justice Suspended Amid Misconduct Investigation.

Ghana’s President, John Mahama, on Tuesday announced the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo following multiple petitions calling for her removal over alleged misconduct.

The decision comes after three formal petitions accused Justice Torkornoo of tampering with court records and misusing public funds. The President, in consultation with the Council of State, has determined that a *prima facie* case has been established, warranting a full investigation.

A statement from the presidency confirmed that Torkornoo would be suspended from her role while a five-member committee probes the allegations. Although specific details of the accusations remain undisclosed, the development marks an unprecedented moment in Ghana’s judicial history.

This is the first time a sitting Chief Justice is being formally investigated through a constitutional process. Torkornoo, aged 61, was appointed in June 2023 as the country’s 15th Chief Justice and the third woman to hold the prestigious position.

The investigative panel is being chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang and includes former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo among its members. Their task will be to determine the veracity of the claims and recommend appropriate action in line with the law.

President Mahama, who assumed office in January, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to stamping out corruption in all sectors, including the judiciary. The suspension of the Chief Justice is seen as a strong signal of his resolve to ensure accountability at the highest levels.

Legal observers and civil society groups are closely monitoring the development, which could have significant implications for public trust in Ghana’s justice system.
