In the wake of a disturbing communal clash between Ibeno, Eket, and Esit Eket Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has issued a stern warning against those perpetrating violence and fanning the flames of disunity.
The Governor, accompanied by top security officials and key stakeholders, visited the conflict-stricken area to assess the extent of damage and offer support to affected communities.
“I have credible intelligence on those who are sponsoring our young people to go out and cause this mayhem,” Governor Eno declared, emphasizing the government’s determination to bring perpetrators to justice. He urged political leaders to refrain from taking sides and inciting further unrest, emphasizing the importance of unity in resolving the conflict.
Highlighting the interconnectedness of the warring communities, Governor Eno appealed for peace, citing the prevalence of intermarriages and familial ties. “We are determined to put an end to this problem,” he affirmed, promising support for victims of the clashes, including those receiving treatment at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
Addressing the root cause of the conflict, Stubbs Creek Forest, Governor Eno clarified that the land belongs to the government and vowed to protect it from encroachment. He underscored the importance of the forest reserve in providing jobs for local youths through carbon credit initiatives.
Warning against any attempts to challenge the government’s resolve, Governor Eno assured stringent enforcement of law and order by security agencies. “They have the directive to confront any group that may want to start this problem again,” he cautioned, urging compliance with the law.
Regarding the ongoing legal dispute over the new state map, Governor Eno appealed for patience and urged calm pending the court’s decision. “Please let us be calm and maintain peace,” he implored, emphasizing his commitment to fostering reconciliation and stability in the region.
