The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced its intention to distribute seized food items to alleviate the current hardship faced by Nigerians due to soaring food prices.
This decision comes in response to widespread protests across the country highlighting the challenges of food security and high costs of essential items.
Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, revealed the plans on Tuesday, emphasising the commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda. The NCS aims to ensure the distributed food items are safe for consumption before dissemination.
In a statement issued by the service’s National Public Relations Officer, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, it was highlighted that the initiative is driven by the core mandate of serving the best interests of Nigerians and fostering economic stability. The urgent need to safeguard food availability and mitigate the impact of scarcity on citizens prompted the proactive stance.
The distribution process will involve the direct disposal of forfeited food items to the Federal Government, which will then be certified fit for consumption by relevant agencies. These items will be equitably distributed nationwide through NCS formations, with a focus on transparency, fairness, and public safety.
The NCS reiterated its dedication to ensuring the nation’s food security and enhancing the economic well-being of Nigerians, seeking the support and cooperation of the public in overcoming these challenges for a more prosperous future.
