Hungary Coach Addresses Concerns Over Szoboszlai’s Fitness Ahead of Crucial Euro 2024 Clash.
Hungary’s head coach, Marco Rossi, has addressed concerns regarding the fitness of team captain Dominik Szoboszlai ahead of their vital Euro 2024 match against Scotland on Sunday. Szoboszlai missed training sessions, but Rossi clarified that this was a precautionary measure for workload management after back-to-back defeats to Switzerland and Germany in Group A. Rossi assured that Szoboszlai’s condition would be monitored closely, but there were no significant concerns about his fitness at this stage.
Rossi also announced that he would be making a few adjustments to the starting line-up, not due to poor performances, but to bring some freshness into the squad. Emphasising the importance of rest and recovery, especially for Szoboszlai after a demanding season, Rossi stated, “We will make a couple of changes to ensure we have more energy on the field,” during a press conference on Saturday.
Hungary entered Euro 2024 with high hopes, supported by an impressive 14-match unbeaten run from November 2022 to March 2023 and notable victories over England in the UEFA Nations League. However, their campaign has been challenging, starting with a 3-1 defeat by Switzerland followed by a 2-0 loss to hosts Germany, leaving them at the bottom of the group with no points. Defender Endre Botka reflected on the team’s raised expectations and the need to return to basics after disappointing performances in the first two matches.
The upcoming match in Stuttgart will mark the first competitive encounter between Hungary and Scotland. Scotland have one point from two games, having rebounded from a 5-1 defeat by Germany to draw 1-1 with Switzerland. Rossi acknowledged the critical nature of the game, stating, “There’s no alternative for us but to win if we want to continue our progress. The pressure is equally on both us and Scotland.”
