Markets across Ibadan will shut down on Friday, September 26, 2025, as traders honor the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja.

The directive was issued by the Babaloja General of Oyo State, Asiwaju Yekeen Abass, as a mark of respect for the new monarch.

All markets within the eleven local government areas of Ibadan land, including those in the city center and surrounding areas, will suspend trading activities for the day. Asiwaju Abass congratulated Oba Ladoja on behalf of the market leaders’ council, zonal executives, and the entire trading community in Oyo State. “As traders, we must show respect to our revered monarch by honouring the coronation. Markets will remain closed to allow full participation,” Abass stated.

The Babaloja General prayed for a peaceful, prosperous, and impactful reign that would bring progress to Ibadan land and the state as a whole. He urged all traders to attend the coronation ceremony at Mapo Hall, stressing the importance of showing support and reverence for the new traditional ruler. “It is important to show support and reverence for our new traditional ruler,” Abass emphasized.

The market shutdown is a longstanding practice in Yoruba culture, symbolizing solidarity and collective celebration. By closing their markets and attending the ceremony, traders are playing an active role in preserving the cultural legacy of Ibadan land for future generations.

The coronation promises to be a grand event that celebrates Ibadan’s rich heritage and signals a new era of progress for the city. The event will take place at Mapo Hall, a fitting location for this royal ceremony. Guests from across Nigeria, including dignitaries, traditional rulers, and government officials, are expected to attend the event.

Asiwaju Abass also extended birthday wishes to Oba Ladoja, wishing him many happy returns and continued good health.
