Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has hinted at the possibility of renewed negotiations with the United States regarding Iran’s advancing nuclear program.
Khamenei’s comments come as tensions escalate in the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and the approach of the U.S. presidential election in November. The Supreme Leader’s statements mirror those made during the lead-up to the 2015 nuclear deal, which saw Iran’s nuclear activities curbed in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
The U.S. State Department responded by emphasizing the importance of actions over words, urging Iran to halt its nuclear escalations and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if it seeks to demonstrate a genuine shift in approach.
Since the collapse of the 2015 deal, Iran has resumed its enrichment activities, pushing uranium levels close to weapons-grade purity.
Khamenei’s openness to negotiations might provide President Pezeshkian with the political backing to reengage with the West, although significant hurdles remain.
