Just–In: Adamawa State Government Revokes Atiku Abubakar’s Waziri Title In New Policy Shift

Adamawa State Government Revokes Atiku Abubakar’s Waziri Title In New Policy Shift.

In a surprising move, the Adamawa State Government, led by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has revoked the prestigious traditional title of Waziri Adamawa previously held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The decision, announced on 24 June 2025, is part of a new policy mandating that all titleholders and council members within the state’s emirate councils must be indigenes of their respective chiefdoms.

The Waziri Adamawa title, considered the second-highest authority after the Lamido of Adamawa, is a significant honour within the Adamawa Emirate Council. The state government’s directive stipulates that council members and titleholders in the Adamawa Emirate must hail from specific districts, including Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song, and Zumo. Similarly, those in the Mubi Emirate Council must be indigenes of Mubi North or Mubi South, with comparable rules applied across all emirate and traditional councils in the state.

This policy has effectively disqualified Atiku Abubakar, a native of Jada Local Government Area under the Ganye Chiefdom, from retaining the Waziri title, as Jada falls outside the designated districts for the Adamawa Emirate Council. Several other prominent titleholders are also reportedly affected by this sweeping reform, though specific names have yet to be disclosed.

The decision has sparked widespread discussion, with some observers suggesting it may be linked to political tensions between Governor Fintiri and Atiku, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics and a key member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007, has been a vocal critic of the current administration and recently spearheaded the formation of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), a new political coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s government in the 2027 elections. However, the state government has maintained that the policy is solely intended to ensure that traditional titles are held by indigenes of the relevant chiefdoms, dismissing speculations of political motivations.

Posts on X reflect a mix of sentiments, with some users expressing shock at the development, while others argue that stripping Atiku of the title will not diminish his legacy or influence. One user remarked, “Stripping Atiku of a traditional title won’t erase his voice,” highlighting the former Vice President’s enduring prominence in Nigerian politics.

The revocation comes at a time of heightened political activity in Adamawa and beyond, with Atiku’s coalition, the ADA, gaining attention as a potential force in the 2027 elections. Critics of the policy argue it could deepen divisions within the state, while supporters view it as a step towards preserving the cultural integrity of traditional institutions.

As of now, neither Atiku Abubakar nor his representatives have issued an official response to the revocation. The Adamawa State Government has also not provided further details on the full scope of the policy or the other individuals affected. The move is likely to fuel ongoing debates about the intersection of politics and traditional institutions in Nigeria, particularly in the lead-up to the next general election.

This development underscores the dynamic and often complex relationship between governance, tradition, and politics in Adamawa State, with implications that may resonate across the country.
