The Federal High Court in Abuja has set November 20, 2025 for the delivery of judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Judge James Omotosho fixed the date after Kanu failed to open his defence within the six-day period granted by the court.
Kanu had questioned the validity of the charges, arguing that the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act under which he is being prosecuted had been repealed and insisting that there is no valid charge against him.
The prosecution alleges Kanu committed offences under a seven-count terrorism indictment connected to his campaign for southeastern Nigeria’s secession, which Kanu denies.
Justice Omotosho said that by not presenting a defence, Kanu waived his right to fair hearing, emphasizing that the defendant cannot claim to have been denied the constitutionally guaranteed rights to fair hearing.
With the judgment now scheduled, attention will focus on potential political and security implications, particularly in the southeast where IPOB remains active.
