JUST IN: Olumide Akpata Emerges Winner Of Edo Labour Party Governorship Primary

Former National Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, clinched victory in the Edo State Labour Party governorship primary election held on Friday.

The Returning Officer for the election, Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, announced Akpata as the winner after tallying the votes. Akpata secured a total of 316 votes, solidifying his position as the frontrunner in the contest.

Responding to speculations regarding his candidacy, Akpata reiterated that his ambition was not influenced by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

He dispelled rumors suggesting Obaseki’s sponsorship of his candidacy, labeling such claims as unfounded and baseless. Addressing journalists in Benin during the award day of the 2023 Press Week of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akpata emphasized his independence from external influences.

“That I am sponsored by Godwin Obaseki is an unfounded and baseless rumor,” Akpata stated firmly. “My relationship with the governor has never been hidden, but it does not imply any form of sponsorship or allegiance in political matters.”

Akpata further addressed allegations of attempting to buy the Labour Party ticket with cash, dismissing them as displays of immaturity.

“Those who allege that I am attempting to buy the LP ticket with cash are displaying immaturity,” he asserted. “Politics is not my job; it is out of interest that we have come to the rescue of this state and Nigeria. I cannot be the hireling of anybody.”

Regarding accusations of being labeled a “moneybag,” Akpata countered, “I put my money where my mouth is. Politics is expensive all over the world.” He emphasized the importance of genuine party support and unity in the face of financial constraints, urging fellow party members to rally together for the common cause.
