On Tuesday, July 16, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a significant financial allocation to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members during the closing ceremony of their orientation camp.
The governor distributed N427.7 million among 4,277 members of Batch B Stream 1 NYSC posted to Lagos State. Each corps member is set to receive approximately N100,000.
In addition to this, Sanwo-Olu pledged further support for the NYSC programme:
1. A N100 million donation to the NYSC and support staff
2. A commitment to approve N5 billion for the construction of a permanent orientation camp
3. A promise of automatic employment into the civil service for 100 corps members upon completion of their service year
During his address, the governor emphasised the transformative nature of the three-week orientation course. He urged corps members to apply the principles of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork they had learned during their upcoming year of service.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the NYSC programme in fostering national unity, describing the orientation camp as a “microscopic representation of Lagos State – a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions.”
The governor encouraged the corps members to actively engage with local communities, address challenges, and contribute to meaningful projects throughout their service year in Lagos State.
As the corps members prepare to depart for their primary assignments, Sanwo-Olu’s financial gesture and promises of continued support underscore the state government’s commitment to the NYSC program and youth development in Lagos.
