Manchester City’s Revival or False Dawn? Guardiola Cautions Against Optimism Following Back To Back Wins.

By Govima Sports Correspondent/Editor.

Manchester City’s resounding 4-1 victory over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday might have seemed like a herald of their return to dominance, but manager Pep Guardiola has swiftly quashed such notions. Despite ending a winless streak and marking the first time since August they scored four goals in a Premier League match, Guardiola insists the performance was below par.

The win, which included Erling Haaland’s first league double since September, has lifted City to sixth in the league standings, now just three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest. This victory comes after a challenging period where City only managed two wins from their last ten games, raising questions about their form and consistency.

However, Guardiola was quick to temper expectations when speaking to the media post-match. “No,” he asserted when asked if this performance signified the return of the ‘old’ Manchester City. “You judge the results. Our performance was not good. We saw in many years our level. We are not at our level.”

The Spaniard continued to stress the importance of not misinterpreting the win. “Don’t misunderstand me. I’m so happy. I will sleep better until the FA Cup [tie against Salford on 11 January]. But he asked if the old Manchester City and the way we play is back? No. You have to know it. You watched the games for years. We’re not at the level, come on.”

Guardiola acknowledged the positives from the match but was firm in his belief that the team’s play has not returned to the heights of previous seasons. “Of course, there are an incredible lot of positives. But if you ask me the team is playing like it has played the years ago, no, absolutely not.”

This candid assessment from Guardiola comes at a time when the club’s fans and critics alike are eager to see signs of the formidable team that has dominated the Premier League in recent years. While the result against West Ham offers a moment of respite, Guardiola’s comments suggest that there is still much work to be done before City can be considered back to their best.

As Manchester City prepares for their upcoming FA Cup match against Salford, Guardiola’s focus will undoubtedly be on refining the team’s play rather than resting on the laurels of a single result. The football world will be watching closely to see if this is indeed a turning point or just a brief flicker of the City we once knew.
