Mason Greenwood In Constructive Talks Over Manchester United Exit

Mason Greenwood in Constructive Talks Over Manchester United Exit.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has engaged in what have been described as “constructive discussions” with senior football figures at the club regarding his departure from Old Trafford.

BBC Sport reports that Greenwood, 22, did not participate in the first day of United’s pre-season training on Monday, with no immediate plans for his return. Instead, he briefly visited the club’s training complex to meet the football leadership team, including new sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox. The discussions focused on finding Greenwood a new club.

This visit marked Greenwood’s first appearance at Carrington since serious allegations were made against him in January 2020. Following these allegations, the club announced he “would not return to training or playing matches until further notice”. Although charges were dropped last year, Greenwood remained unavailable for selection.

Manchester United reversed an initial plan by then-chief executive Richard Arnold to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad. Instead, a statement on 21 August confirmed a mutual agreement for the England international to continue his career elsewhere.

United have not released further statements on Greenwood since, but reports indicated in May that the club’s preference is for the striker to secure a permanent move. Greenwood spent last season on loan at La Liga side Getafe, and he is now attracting interest from Italian club Lazio and French side Marseille, managed by former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi.

United have not commented on reports of a formal bid from Marseille, but BBC Sport indicates that talks are at an advanced stage. Greenwood’s representatives have been contacted for comment.

On the first day of training, forwards Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, along with defender Tyrell Malacia, were absent from club pictures. Sancho has been in a prolonged dispute with manager Erik ten Hag, resulting in his loan to Borussia Dortmund for the latter part of last season. Malacia missed the entire season due to injury, and Rashford was excluded from England’s Euro 2024 squad due to poor form.

However, Rashford was present at Carrington on Monday, starting physical work two weeks ahead of schedule. This early start reflects his determination to regain the form that saw him score 30 goals in the 2022-23 season. Despite speculation about a potential sale, it is understood that Rashford remains committed to Manchester United.
