The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has condoled with the family of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a 29-year-old Arise News anchor who was tragically killed during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja.

The minister described Maduagwu’s death as a grievous loss to her family, the Arise News team, the Nigerian media fraternity, and the nation.

In a letter of condolence addressed to the Chairman of Arise News, Nduka Obaigbena, Idris praised Maduagwu as a vibrant and dedicated news anchor, consummate lawyer, and model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences across Nigeria and beyond. “I write to convey our deepest condolences to you and the entire ARISE News family on the shocking and untimely death of your esteemed anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu,” he stated.

The minister expressed sadness over the heinous incident that cut down a promising young journalist in her prime. “Ms Somtochukwu’s tragic death is a grievous loss not only to the ARISE News family but to the Nigerian media fraternity, and indeed the nation,” he added.

Idris assured the family and the public that a swift investigation would be conducted to unravel the circumstances leading to Maduagwu’s death. He extended his heartfelt sympathy to her parents, siblings, colleagues, and loved ones, praying that God grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

The Nigeria Police have launched a full investigation into the incident, with authorities committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. Maduagwu’s death has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for improved security measures in the nation’s capital.

The Arise News management described Maduagwu as a cherished member of their team, a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with viewers. “Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer, a professional and supportive colleague, and a friend to many,” the statement read. “We demand a thorough and swift investigation to bring justice to her memory through the arrest and prosecution of those responsible”.
