NDLEA Auctions Seized Properties To Dismantle Drug Cartel Networks.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has auctioned properties and assets seized from convicted drug traffickers, with the total value running into millions of naira.
Speaking at the auction in Abuja on Tuesday, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, assured the public of a fair and transparent process. He emphasised that the exercise was designed to dismantle the financial networks of drug cartels and serve as a deterrent to illicit activities.
Marwa noted that in the past, convicted traffickers would return to their assets after serving jail terms. However, with the agency’s new approach, they will no longer benefit from their criminal proceeds. The forfeited properties were sold to the highest bidders, with the proceeds supporting NDLEA’s operations.
The auction was witnessed by officials from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), who commended the NDLEA for its transparency.
However, Chief Iyke Nwoko, former National Treasurer of the Nigeria Association of Auctioneers, called for a review of the government’s valuation process, arguing that high pricing made bidding difficult for potential buyers.
The properties auctioned were located in Lagos, Ogun, Akure, and Abuja.
