The Chairman and CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has been chosen to represent the nation at the 14th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit (GFMD) in Geneva, Switzerland, from January 23 to 25.

According to the Press Statement Released,at the summit, organized under the auspices of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and Alefa Diaspora, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa will deliver a lead paper addressing the cultural and narrative aspects of migration in the Nigerian context.

The three-day event revolves around the theme: “Culture as a potent tool for reshaping narratives and driving positive change in the perception of population movement due to climate change: Crossed perspectives and Good perceptive.”

As the Chairman of NIDCOM, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa will join representatives from Fiji and Jamaica in a roundtable panel discussion, exploring the theme’s diverse perspectives. The OACPS had designated her as its Diaspora Champion in 2023, highlighting her influential role in promoting diaspora-related initiatives.

The press statement further emphasized that the side event during the summit will provide an opportunity for OACPS countries to share experiences, best practices, and planned initiatives related to the thematic of the roundtable, as indicated in a letter signed by Dr. Ibrahim Norbert Richard, Assistant Secretary-General of the Political Affairs and Human Development Department.

The GFMD, initiated in 2007, is a state-led, informal, and non-binding process that significantly contributes to shaping the global discourse on migration and development.

This year’s summit is expected to bring together around 100 governments, civil society representatives, the private sector, local authorities, youth advocates, the UN system, and other relevant stakeholders.
