During an official visit to Russia, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, revealed Nigeria’s interest in joining the BRICS alliance and its unwavering ambition to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
In discussions with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Ambassador Tuggar emphasised Nigeria’s appreciation for Russia’s longstanding support and solidarity. He underscored Nigeria’s intention to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with Russia, citing the countries’ cordial relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1960.
Highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to global decision-making, Ambassador Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s desire to ensure African representation at the highest levels. He acknowledged Russia’s importance as a strategic partner in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and expressed support for peaceful resolution in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the significance of bilateral agreements and the Joint Commission between Nigeria and Russia, aimed at deepening economic, cultural, and political ties. He also acknowledged Russia’s role in facilitating projects such as the Ajaokuta Steel Company and the Aluminium Smelting Company in Nigeria.
Military and defense cooperation between Russia and Nigeria, dating back to the Soviet era, were highlighted by Ambassador Tuggar, who appreciated Russia’s assistance in intelligence sharing, particularly in counterterrorism efforts. He also noted Russia’s support in education through scholarships to Nigerian students.
In the pursuit of sustainable energy, Ambassador Tuggar mentioned Nigeria’s interest in partnering with Russia on renewable energy projects, particularly in the peaceful use of nuclear power.
Overall, the discussions between Nigeria and Russia underscored the mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities for cooperation across various sectors.
