Thrilling Start to Nigeria Women Football League Super 6 Playoff in Yenagoa

The Nigeria Women Football League Super 6 playoff kicked off with an exciting day of football at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Goals were shared across the three matches on the opening day of action.

In the first match, Edo Queens delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Confluence Queens 5-1. Emem Essien opened the scoring for Edo Queens in the 13th minute, but Confluence Queens equalized eight minutes later through Merit Offor. Goodness Osigwe quickly restored Edo Queens’ lead just two minutes after the equalizer. Chioma Moses increased the advantage in the 34th minute, and Essien scored her second goal early in the second half. Osigwe completed the rout at the hour mark, securing a comprehensive victory for Edo Queens. This win propels them to the top of the standings. They will next face debutants Heartland Queens on Monday, May 20, 2024.

The second match of the day saw Nasarawa Amazons and Heartland Queens play out a goalless draw. Heartland’s Mary Lucky thought she had broken the deadlock in the fifth minute, but her goal was ruled out for offside. In the 19th minute, Nasarawa Amazons were awarded a penalty after a Heartland Queens defender handled the ball inside the box. However, Heartland goalkeeper Chukwu Uchenna made a double save to deny Chinyere Kalu from the spot. Both teams will aim for their first win in the upcoming matches. Nasarawa Amazons will face hosts Bayelsa Queens, while Heartland Queens will take on Confluence Queens on Monday.

The star match of the opening day featured a South-South derby between Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Bayelsa Queens took the lead ten minutes into the second half when Fehintola Mabokanje converted a penalty after a Rivers Angels player handled the ball inside the area. With eight minutes remaining, substitute and former Bayelsa Queens star Rita Peter scored a rebound to restore parity for Rivers Angels, ensuring the match ended in a stalemate.

The match was attended by the First Lady of Bayelsa State, Mrs. Gloria Diri, who cheered for the host team, Bayelsa Queens. Both teams will look to secure their first victory in their next fixtures. Bayelsa Queens will take on Nasarawa Amazons, while Rivers Angels will face Edo Queens on Monday.
